Safdie developed Habitat from his master's thesis at McGill University and built it as a pavilion for Expo 67. It sits at 2600 Avenue Pierre-Dupuy, on a strip of land between the St. Lawrence River and the Old Port, and is recognised as an architectural landmark.

The complex was designed with 158 residences made of linked concrete modules; owners have combined some over the years, bringing the count to 146, according to Wikipedia and Dezeen. The New York Times reported in 1986 that the tenants bought the complex for $11.4 million.

Because it is also a tourist destination, the complex runs guided visits through habitat67.com. Google's review topics include guided tours and private property, so expect visitors around the grounds.

Safdie Architects describes 158 residences; Wikipedia and Dezeen say units were combined over the years to 146. Wikipedia gives the postal code as H3C 3R4, while Google's listing uses H3C 3R6. Daily Hive's 2022 mention of a convenience store may be out of date: Google marks the grocery-café at 2600 Avenue Pierre-Dupuy as permanently closed.
